I agree with you, totally, Phill. I'm so tired of zero tolerance being used because someone who IS a bad kid got disciplined and yelled descrimination. It is so obvious that this kid is NOT a bad kid. He makes straight A's, dresses very well, is respected by his teachers and administrators, gives respect in return, and is a Boy Scout and proud of it. Just because some kid in a minority group did something bad and new it was bad doesn't mean that all kids do that. This little boy made an innocent and honest mistake. He had no clue it was wrong. He doesn't have a malicious bone in his little body. Reform school??? Really?? I do agree that discipline was necessary so that he knows it is very important not to bring it to school again and to be more careful next time. But reform school is very drastic and could ruin that child for life! His mother has done a good job, it seems. The schools are too afraid of having a finger pointed at them. And why did the child not know it was against the rules in the first place? Did someone at the school not do their job? If you are going to have a zero tolerance policy, then all of the teachers need to sit down with their students and explain very carefully what that means and what to and not to bring to school to offend the rule. I'm glad the mother is fighting the school system for this child's rights and I'm glad she chose home schooling (as much as I don't agree with home schooling) over reform school. I'd much rather have her teaching him than for him to be damaged in reform school with all the "bad" kids in there. Makes you wonder how many of them are actually "bad" kids!! Funny how one bad apple can spoil a whole country these days!! We're so lost!
